Automotive Ultracapacitor: Instant Power for Peak Demands

An ultracapacitor (supercapacitor or electric double-layer capacitor – EDLC) is an energy storage device that stores electrical energy by electrostatic charge separation, not by chemical reactions like a battery.

This allows it to charge and discharge extremely quickly (seconds), deliver very high peak power, and endure hundreds of thousands of cycles without degradation. In automotive applications, ultracapacitors are used for: regenerative braking recovery (capturing braking energy and releasing it for acceleration), voltage stabilization (preventing dips during load surges like electric power steering), engine start-stop systems (providing the high cranking current), and peak power buffering for electric turbochargers or active suspension. Unlike batteries, they have almost unlimited cycle life and operate well at low temperatures. However, their energy density (Wh/kg) is much lower than batteries, so they cannot provide sustained power.
